Alexandre Desplat: From Intimate Dramas to Blockbuster Scores and Hollywood Bowl Dreams
Throughout my career, I've navigated a unique musical journey that began far from the blockbuster realm I once dreamed of entering. As a young aspiring composer between 17 and 25, I immersed myself in the grand orchestral works of Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, imagining my future in Hollywood's epic soundscapes.
My professional path initially took a different direction with films like "The King's Speech" and "Girl with the Pearl Earring" - more intimate storytelling that required nuanced musical approaches. These projects, along with my work in French cinema, established my reputation for delicate, character-driven compositions rather than the sweeping adventure scores I'd initially envisioned.
The opportunity to work on larger productions like "Godzilla" with Gareth Edwards came later in my career, representing a full-circle moment that connected to those early aspirations. When Gareth, who has become a good friend, approached me for another major project, the timing felt perfect to embrace a large-scale adventure film.
My collaboration with Wes Anderson has produced some of my most distinctive work, including "The Phoenician Scheme" with its driving percussive elements. We previously explored percussion in "Isle of Dogs" and "Grand Budapest Hotel," but this score required a fresh approach since we were working with melodic motifs inspired by Stravinsky's "The Firebird."
When scoring Anderson's films, I never aim for comedy despite their whimsical elements. Instead, I seek to capture their underlying poetry and innocence. The music remains melodic and seemingly simple—though simplicity shouldn't be confused with being simplistic. Whether it's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" or "Grand Budapest Hotel," I strive for emotional resonance rather than humor, creating scores that are childlike but never childish.
For my upcoming Hollywood Bowl performance, selecting which pieces to include posed interesting challenges. Not all film scores translate effectively to the symphonic orchestra format. "Isle of Dogs" and "Asteroid City," despite their musical merits, wouldn't retain their essence when expanded for full orchestra. With "Grand Budapest Hotel," however, I could enhance the original with symphonic elements while preserving its authentic character.
My current work with Guillermo del Toro on "Frankenstein" continues our shared focus on emotional depth rather than horror conventions. Similar to our approach on "Pinocchio" and "The Shape of Water," we're emphasizing character development through lyrical, melodic compositions. The score features a large orchestra, choir, and solo violin to explore the complex relationships between Victor Frankenstein, his creation, and those around them.
Del Toro appreciates my ability to reference cinema beyond just music, and he values how I can push emotional boundaries in unexpected directions. Sometimes he encourages me to be "less French, more Mexican" in my approach, creating a dynamic creative partnership.
After completing such intensive projects, my immediate aspiration is simply rest—genuine sleep and daytime naps to recover. Though there are many directors I admire, I'm content continuing relationships with filmmakers who value my contribution while remaining open to new collaborations that might emerge from cinema's greatest visionaries.I rarely reflect on my past work, especially when I'm engrossed in the next project. The pressure of writing and recording new music keeps me from looking back at my filmography. However, the upcoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl is a significant milestone for me. It's a childhood dream come true, and I am eagerly anticipating the moment. I sincerely hope the audience will enjoy the music and that the venue will be packed.
The July 15th performance at the Hollywood Bowl will feature a carefully curated selection of my compositions, including:
Godzilla (2014)
The Imitation Game (2014)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Wes Anderson Suite:
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The French Dispatch (2021)
Pinocchio (2022)
Suite Royale:
The Queen (2006)
The King’s Speech (2010)
The Lost King (2022)
Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
The Shape of Water (2017)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Suite (2010/2011)
There are also some surprises in store for the audience.
